MU History : Old Trafford Stadium
Old Trafford entering the legend of football for the first time during the 1909/10 season. Land where the stadium was built was purchased by Manchester brewery company (John Henry Davies) and the lease to the club. Davies paid by the building work, which started in 1908 under the supervision of architect Archibald Leitch. By 1910, the club has moved lock, stock and barrel from the old home of Bank Street.
United’s first fixture at Old Trafford was played on 19 February 1910. The new host lost 4-3 in their first visitors Liverpool, but the stadium was successful in accommodating an 80,000 capacity crowd. Two days earlier, the old wood in Bank Street is blown by strong winds - further evidence, perhaps, that is appropriate and necessary to their new home.
Indeed, States have been crowned League Champions for the second time at the end of their first full season at Old Trafford - 1910/1911. They clinched the title at home on the last day of the season, the 5-1 defeat at Sunderland Harold Halse grabbing two goals. Halse also six goals as United beat Swindon Town 8-4 to clinch the Charity Shield.
However feats, States can not maintain their winning run and in 1911/12, which maintain the Champions finished disappointingly in third place. Secretary Manager Ernest Mangnall bore brunt of the criticism, and resigned to join the United States and partners by neighbors Manchester City. Turnbull has been tragically killed during the war in France in May 1917, leaving the States without some of the early centuries of their heroes for their return to league football in 1919/20.
